I have always enjoyed baking, and when it comes to birthdays I try my best to make them special, and the cake is an important part of that. I would like to say my cake efforts started when I had my babies, but I am actually now realizing it started with my husband. You see, he didn’t have the best birthdays as a child, and inevitably just didn’t like celebrating them at all. Unfortunately for him, I am completely the opposite! I think birthdays are a great opportunity to celebrate a persons existence! I love birthdays. One of the more memorable first real cakes I remember making was for his 23rd birthday. It was a homemade chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting. Of course, we only got to enjoy a bite as we hurried out the door to the hospital, because our first baby decided it was time to come!
After that I tried to make a shaped cake. An octopus for my best friend who loves them, and has also spent many years working at the Denver Aquarium. Since then I’ve made many more shaped cakes, and always tried to make them from scratch. I’ve played with fondant and gum paste, and buttercream, but am interested to learn more techniques. One year I was over the fondant thing and learned how to fine smooth the buttercream, and as I ran out of motivation I decided to paint (with food colouring) directly on the cake on a whim, and honestly it was one of my most favorite cakes!
Anyway, here’s some of my favorite cakes I’ve made!
