Fun Cake Supplies for the Beginner

Want to get into decorating cakes, but not sure where to start? You just have to dive right in, as with anything. I am by no means a professional, I really only dabble in cake decorating when I am making cakes for birthdays. So, if you’re like me and you want to use your creativity to make something special, here’s just a couple of tools that I have used that have amped up my cake game.

The basics

There are of course the most basic things you need to get started, like cake pans, icing tips, a buttercream smoother, etc. Something that may be basic to some, but for me I wasn’t aware of at first, is a cake turntable (or revolving cake stand). I mean, I still don’t have one, I just use my barstool with a twisty top! But I digress. I want to talk about just a couple of supplies I have used that have made my cake journey quite fun!

The fun part

One year for Christmas my husband gifted me an airbrush cake painting kit. It came with the airbrush and several food colors (including silver and gold!). He also got some cake stencils to go with it. And the best part, these exciting tools can work for cookies too! The first time I used the airbrushed and stencils was for one of my nephew’s cakes, which was a dinosaur head and feet. I also used a mermaid stencil on one of my daughter’s cakes. I’ve use the spray painter by itself to decorate cakes as well. One technique I’ve seen done that I would love to try is using the stencils with buttercream to give an embossed design!

There’s a lot of nifty tools out there in the way of cake decorating, but these are just a couple that I wanted to share! If you’ve used these or want to share a new tool with me just leave a comment!
