One of the most exciting parts of the year for me is Halloween and coming up with costume ideas. If I can, I really enjoy making my kiddos costumes. This is of course more easily done when they are little and we can come up with simple ideas, but as they get older and more imaginative they have thrown some challenges my way. So, I don’t always make their costumes. If you’re anything like me, being a mom on a budget and limited time, then here’s a few that I have done through the years that were fairly simple to put together.
1. Scuba Baby
Okay this one is a classic, it’s not anything unique. However, this is one is special to me because it was my very first baby’s very first costume. It works so well because you can put a binky on it to look like the respirator and it looks like they are actually using an oxygen tank! We made the tank just by cleaning and painting a 2 liter soda bottle. We used some cord and black tape to tape one line for the binky, and one for a gauge. We then put some velcro on the back of a onesie and on the bottle so we could just attach it to the onesie. Although, there may be a better way to do that part. And I just used some foam sheets to make little flippers.
2. Jack Skellington
Nothing is cuter than a handsome little Jack Skellington. I Just cut and sewed a shirt for the jacket, and found some black pants. Then I used a white paint marker to draw the white lines on both. For the bow, I just cut the bat shape out of black felt and use that same marker to draw the lines and face on it.
3. and 4.
These ones are a group costume. We had Fix it Felix and Vanellope Von Schweetz from the ‘Wreck It Ralph’ movie. For my babygirl we already had a teal jacket, we just had to get some teal pants and paint stripes on them, and a little black skirt. She didn’t have too much hair at this point, but we put a small ponytail in and stuck little marshmallow pieces from Lucky Charms in her hair. The Fix it Felix costume was fairly simple to, especially because we didn’t have to do any sewing. We just grabbed jeans, a blue button down shirt, and a dark blue hat. I did make the patch to put on his shirt and hat with foam pieces. He already had a toy tool belt that came with a hammer, so we painted his hammer gold and voila!
5. Baby Oogie Boogie
Okay, we’re big fans of ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ in this house. So for my third daughter’s first costume I wanted to make her an Oogie Boogie. I had seen crocheted versions of this and fell in love, but I am no crocheter. So I found tan fleece and soft burlap to sew her costume together. Honestly, it wasn’t my best work but it still came out cute, and for Halloween in Idaho, it kept her warm!
6. Demagorgan
This one wasn’t a full costume, it was just a mask, but I really enjoyed making it. My oldest wanted to be a Demagorgan from ‘Stranger Things’. (This is the point where he has started to come up with challenging costumes). I tackled the mask by just buying a cheap simple black mask. I used hanger wire to bend and shape the ‘petals’ of the head and then used masking tape to tape around the wire and stuffing. For all of the teeth on the face and the petals I just used plastic fake finger nail tips and cut and glued them on. I painted the whole mask with acrylic paint.
My older daughter wanted to be ‘Eleven’ from ‘Stranger Things’ as well. And to soften the scaryness that year, we had a cute lil’ Minnie Mouse.
7. Character from the Video Game ‘Sunset Overdrive’
I realize this one may not be as easy of an idea, but I wanted to show it off! My son once again presented a challenge by wanting to be a character/skin from a video game he was playing a lot that year called ‘Sunset Overdrive’. We had to take a couple of Halloween plastic bowls to make the head. The rest we pieced together by buying the shirt and vest off Amazon.
8. Last but not least, UPS baby
Ahhh I just loved this one! We decided to make our youngest a little UPS man. My husband works for UPS and after I saw a brand new toy that Radio Flyer released, which was a UPS ride on, I knew it would be the perfect costume. Now, I tried to find a simple collared brown shirt for him. I thought with being fall time these would be every but nope! So I had to take one of Taylors old shirts and alter it down to my baby’s size and honestly it turned out so cute!
