Happy first day of fall! To kick it off I wanted to share my Easy Halloween vintage ghosts that I made.
My mom was going through her storage and getting rid of things she’s kept over the years, mostly school papers. While organizing she came across some hand crocheted doilies. She wasn’t quite sure if her mother or what family member made them and asked if I wanted them. I decided to take them, even though I wasn’t quite sure what I would do with them.
Then Inspiration Struck!
For a long while I thought maybe they would make cute snowflake decorations for Christmas. But one day a light bulb went off, I should make them into ghosts! I knew all they needed was a bit of Mod Podge and a day to dry and they would make the cutest ghosts.
Supplies
- Doilies
- Mod Podge Stiffy (this type of mod podge is made specifically for fabric)
- Tinfoil
- Cups and glasses for forms/molds
Since I knew I wanted these to be ghosts, I needed to have rounded tops for the heads. I grabbed a couple of different sized glasses, I needed a tall one and a short one because I had a large and smaller doily. I was going to roll up tinfoil to make a ball to form the head around, but then I remembered my toddler has a shoebox full of different sized toy balls. This would work better for a more rounded head shape. I put the ball on top of the upside down cup, then formed a sheet of tinfoil over it.
Mixing the stiffy mod podge. You can use it straight out of the bottle, or mix it with some water depending on how stiff you want your fabric to be. This was my first time working with it, and I wanted my ghosts to be fairly sturdy, especially since they are crocheted. I decided to only mix a little bit of water with it in a cup. Then I just dunked the whole doily in the mixture and set it on the mold.
Perfection
I gave my new ghosts a day to dry, pulled them off the mold, and put some eyes cut out of black fabric on them. And they are beautiful! I’m actually so happy with how they turned out, and that I was able to give some purpose to something vintage and hand made that may have other wise sat in storage. I fear this may start an obsession. I have a lot of scrap fabric…..
