We’ve all done it, gone from one room into the next with full intentions of grabbing something. Only to end up in said room totally clueless as to why we’re there. Motherhood can be humbling in many ways, especially in the short term memory department. From re-heating my coffee for the third time, losing my train of thought, or telling my child to sit instead of my dog. I needed something to help my mom brain.

That’s when I stumbled across Lion’s Mane
I had heard of it a handful of times, but about a year ago we came across a vendor at our local farmers market who specialized in mushrooms. She had tinctures, powders, and a variety of mushrooms displayed. We perused the selections and decided to give the Lion’s Mane tincture a try.
So what is lion’s mane?
It is an edible variety of mushroom that has been used in Chinese medicine, and recent studies are showing many health benefits. The main health benefits it is known for is cognitive wellness. This includes improvement in memory and mood and mental clarity. All the things that a mom who carries the mental load could use.
I had a short stint with citalopram (known as Celexa) after my fourth pregnancy. I really wasn’t fond of how it made me feel. After we got the lion’s mane tincture and had been taking it consistently for a couple of weeks I noticed some subtle changes. It wasn’t a ‘miracle’ or ‘life-changing’ change, but it was meaningful. I found that I felt less ‘foggy’, I was retaining memories both recent and past. I had more energy – not in the sudden boost from caffeine type of energy but in a soft and non-jittery way.
Here’s what I’ve learned:
First, I can take it at will. I like that this isn’t required as a daily supplement like a prescription. I take it when I want, if I miss a day it doesn’t ‘undo progress’. It feels clean and clear, which is a bonus.
Second, there’s a variety of lion’s mane supplements out there. Make sure to read reviews and ingredients and see what works for you. We started with the tincture I mentioned, but it was getting hard to get past the flavor, even when added to a cup of juice. We ended up finding a capsule that works really well and have been using for about the last 8 months now. You can click the link below to learn more about the capsules we use:

Third, it’s not magic. As with any other supplement sleep, hydration, and nutrition still play a role in overall wellness. Lion’s mane has been a helpful addition but it is not a replacement.
This is my personal experience, this is not medical advice. If you’ve been feeling the weight of brain fog and looking for something, this might be worth looking into. Of course, always check with your doctor or health car provider if you have any questions.
At the end of the day I think we’re all just trying our best. I was tired of feeling disassociated in the presence of my kids. I have really enjoyed regaining my clarity and energy with this supplement.
