The most spookyful time of the year! I know, that’s not a word, but I love fall and Halloween! Over the years we’ve made some of our own decorations for Halloween that I absolutely love! We certainly don’t make everything ourselves, but what we have made has so much more value to me. I truly thrive on being creative and even more so getting to share it. Here’s just a few things we’ve done that maybe you can too!
Pumpkin stack, pumpkin totem pole?
I don’t know what you would call this, but I got inspired by ideas from Pinterest and Facebook to take the plastic pumpkin trick-or-treat buckets and stack a few, throw some paint on ’em, and stick foliage in the top one to make a fun porch decoration. There’s a high chance you’ve seen this idea float around each fall. However, we struck gold when went on our search for the buckets, which made our spin on this decoration quite unique. While shopping at Target in the seasonal section, we came across JUMBO versions of the classic plastic bucket. We snagged what I’m pretty sure was the rest of what they had and hurried home. Taylor made a base with some old pallet wood plank, and then fashioned a 2×2 wood board to it to stick each pumpkin on. We drilled out the bottoms of each pumpkin and had to take the handles off as well. While we assembled everything together we also put in a string of lights so that it would glow. We took a top hat from an old costume and put it on top to finish the look, along with some wreath decor that we got at Michaels.
Mantel Scarf
We have a fabric store that always has the cutest seasonal fabrics. Again, being inspired by images I had seen I really wanted to make a mantel scarf. It really wasn’t too hard, as it was just a bunch of triangles of fabric that I sewed together. I arranged the triangles in two rows so that the back row was a bit shorter than the first row. The back row was also more simple or solid fabric triangles, while the front row had the cuter prints. I then used a table runner that I sewed them all onto to make the scarf and it came out really cute!
Character Blocks
This decoration was actually born from my son’s 5th birthday party, which was themed after ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ and was a carnival. Really this one doubles as a decoration and as a game. If you’re the type of person that like to throw Halloween parties then this idea would work great for you! I painted 10 wooden blocks with various characters from the classic Halloween movie. You can then stack them in a pyramid just like a good ole’ fashioned knock the blocks over game. Or, you can do whatever else you would like with them.
